Clive Owen Electric Palace Appeal Launch Harwich 10.11.06<\/p>\n

Hollywood star and Tendring resident Clive Owen
\nlast night launched an \u00c2\u00a385,000 appeal for repairs to
\nthe Electric Palace cinema in Harwich with a
\npassionate speech. <\/p>\n

“I’m really proud to be asked to be Patron of this very
\nspecial cinema,” he said. “This building is not only a
\nbeautiful and historic one, it is also a very important
\none. I got my film education going to all the old rep
\ncinemas like this one.” <\/p>\n

Many of those cinemas had since disappeared, he
\nsaid, adding that the multiplexes were unable to
\nmatch the variety of programming found in small
\nindependent venues like The Electric Palace. <\/p>\n

“It is vital that we use and support The Electric
\nPalace,” he said. “We just have to raise the amount
\nneeded.” <\/p>\n

Earlier in the evening, which marked Mr. Owen’s first
\nappearance as Patron of the cinema, chairman of The
\nElectric Palace Chris Strachan had highlighted the
\nproblems in maintaining one of the oldest cinemas in
\nthe country. <\/p>\n

The Electric Palace is currently on English Heritage’s
\nregister of historic buildings at risk of deterioration,
\nbut raising \u00c2\u00a385,000 will guarantee an independent
\nfuture for the 1911-built cinema as it approaches its
\n100th birthday. <\/p>\n

A showing of Mr. Owen’s latest film, Children of Men,
\nwas followed by an extended question and answer
\nsession in which the actor revealed just how important
\nwatching a film in the cinema – rather than on TV or
\nDVD – is not only to himself but also to other
